Question by summer_00_butterfly:Is it possible to make old broken crayons into candles? Is that the right kind of wax?
I know next to nothing about making candles but would like to give it a shot and since I am always thinking of ways to reduce, reuse, recycle,I thought to myself "I wonder how many broken crayons end up in land fills every year?" and the first thing that popped into my mind besides getting one of those crayon recycling machines from Crayola was to make them into something else functional like candles. Thanks!

Yes,you can use crayons to make candles. You can use them alone,if you have enough or add them to parafin to make custom colors.
You might Google candle making or go to about.com and find out what you need to do. Normally you either have a candle melting pot or use a can in a pot of water. As a caution, you have to watch the volatility of parafin/wax. It is fairly simple to do,however, and you might have to go to a Michaels,Joanns or Hobby Lobby type store to get wicks and more information. You may have to pre-dip some wicking first depending on the type you get.
A fun candle to make is an ice candle, using ice cubes broken up and a quart size milk carton -- waxy cardboard type. You can also use damp fine sand to make sand candles. We made them as kids and had loads of fun. Home made candles are cute made in recycled tea cups, decorated glasses or jars,or whatever will not burn and still hold hot candle wax.
You can also make shallow candles (example:in decorator cupcake papers held in a cupcake pan) and after hardening they will float in a bowl of water.
